I have recently been taking some of the older used computers I get from upgrades and recycle/recondition them for donations to local charities.

If you have an old computer you are going to throw out give it to me and I will security wipe all data and install a new operating system so it may help someone less fortunate.

This will keep your personal information out of the wrong hands and help the environment and the community.

If you need service please call Biztek in Wyandotte at 734-282-1800 9AM to 5PM Mon-Fri

Software Suggestions and Links

Everyone should have an anti-virus program on their computer and it should always be kept up to date no matter how you use your computer, especially those of you who "only read email from people you know". Most viruses collect e-mail addresses and mail themselves out. Imagine a virus getting a spammers e-mail list. It only takes 1 virus 1 time to destroy all your information.

Anti-virus

Trend Micro - My favorite anti-virus software program which includes a built in firewall and spyware removal. It usually runs about $49 for it but it's worth it. They also offer free online scanning as well.

Panda Cloud Anti-virusFree simple to use anti-virus. It removes viruses without the annoying “Hey a found a virus what should I do with it” pop-up. Just says neutralized but you can see what is was or recover it later.

Avast Home Avast Home Edition - A free anti-virus for home users. Registration is required and a product key is e-mailed to you giving you a years worth of protection which is renewable at no cost as well.

Spy and Adware removal

Superantispyware - Removes pesky spyware, adware, and tracking cookies from your computer. These little buggers track your surfing habits and relay the information back to their main site. This information may also include software installed on your computer as well as personal information.

Spybot-S&D - Another spyware remover like Ad-aware which removes spyware, adware, key loggers, Internet dialers, browser hijackers, and even some trojans. It's immunize feature even keeps some pests from redownloading into your system.

Spyware Terminator – Open source (free) anti-malware and anti-virus software available for both home and business use.

Internet Explorer Alternatives

Firefox - My favorite web browser. If you're tired of Internet Explorer this a great breath of fresh air. It includes many useful features including built in pop-up blocking, automatically filling in forms and tabbed browsing so you can view multiple websites with only one window.

Thunderbird - If spam has gotten you down try this Outlook Express replacement which learns what is junk mail by simple click. Simple clean user interface makes it easy to use.

Lightning - A calendar add-on to Thunderbird which makes it seem more like Microsoft Outlook. This allows you to keep important dates as handy as your e-mail.

Misc.

Outpost Firewall - Now available as a complete security suite including anti-virus and anti-spyware protection and it's still free.

OpenOffice - Another piece of Opensource software that is an office suite comparable to Micro$oft Office. Spreadsheets(Excel), Word Documents(Word), Presentation(PowerPoint), HTML editor(webpage design), and Drawing(Publisher) are all included.
